A DENTIST from Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur has lost RM15,000 after falling victim to a sophisticated scam in which the perpetrator impersonated police officers, Brickfields District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook, reported.

The victim, a 34-year-old dental professional, received repeated calls from unknown numbers starting in November last year. On 28 November 2025, the dentist was contacted by an individual claiming to be a police officer who alleged the victim was involved in illicit financial activities.

Subsequent calls came from other numbers, with the caller presenting himself as a senior officer from the Kangar District Police Headquarters in Perlis.

The suspect, who claimed the rank of Assistant Commissioner, instructed the victim to make payments to resolve the alleged case.

“In panic, the victim transferred RM10,000 to a bank account provided by the suspect and an additional RM5,000 to an e-wallet account also supplied by the impersonator,” Hoo said.

The victim only realised the fraud after confiding in her mother. Investigations revealed that the suspect required the dentist to report daily via WhatsApp and provide personal details for verification, threatening arrest if instructions were not followed.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - March 4, 2026
