POLICE have confirmed that independent preacher Zamri Vinoth and activist Tamim Dahri, both under investigation in separate cases, have fled to Thailand.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said efforts to locate the two individuals are ongoing, with assistance from Thai authorities.

According to Mohd Khalid, investigations involving Zamri over remarks made during a rally in the capital on 7 February have been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Prosecutors have directed that charges be brought under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which relates to statements likely to cause public mischief by intending or potentially causing fear or alarm among the public.

In a separate matter, police have also referred investigations into Zamri’s alleged derogatory remarks about the Indian community to the Penang prosecution office.

The case carries a directive for charges under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.

Meanwhile, the investigation involving Tamim concerns the alleged destruction of a soolam — a sacred symbol in the Hindu faith — at the former site of a temple in Langkawi, Kedah.

The investigation papers have been submitted to the Kedah prosecution office, which has directed that charges be filed under Section 295 of the Penal Code.

“Charges will be filed in the near future once both individuals have been located and brought back,” he said in a statement last night.

Mohd Khalid added that the police remain firmly committed and will not compromise with any individual or group involved in activities that threaten public order and security.

“The police are always committed and will not compromise with individuals or groups involved in activities that undermine public order and safety.” - March 14, 2026
