THREE people were killed and five others injured in a serious road accident involving two vehicles on the Pan Borneo Highway along the Serian–Sri Aman route near Kampung Selepong Jinggau earlier today.

The collision, which occurred at about 8.20am, involved a Proton X70 and a Perodua Alza, with one of the vehicles catching fire following the impact.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre said an emergency call was received at 8.30am, prompting a response from personnel at the Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Station.

Upon arrival at 8.52am, firefighters found the Perodua Alza already ablaze.

"The accident claimed the lives of three victims travelling in the Proton X70, comprising an elderly man, Lau Sie Tung, 70, as well as two adult women, Grace Lau Chi Ai, 22, and Lau Yok Leh, 22.

"Two boys who were in the same vehicle sustained head injuries and were given initial treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services team before being taken to Sri Aman Hospital," he said.

Three occupants of the Perodua Alza, comprising an adult woman and two boys, survived with minor injuries despite the vehicle being completely destroyed by fire.

"All injured victims were transported to Sri Aman Hospital by Ministry of Health ambulances for further treatment.

"Operations were fully concluded at 10am after firefighting and clearing works were completed, while the bodies of the three deceased were handed over to the police for further action," he said.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways during peak travel periods, particularly as traffic volume increases ahead of festive celebrations - March 20, 2026
