MORE than 20,000 people from diverse backgrounds attended the Johor Palace open house at Istana Besar, as members of the public turned out in large numbers to celebrate Aidilfitri with the royal family.
Crowds began forming as early as 6.30am outside the palace gates in Johor Bahru, with families eager to experience the festive atmosphere and enjoy a wide selection of food offered at over 17 stalls featuring both traditional and modern dishes.
Among the highlights were local favourites such as ketupat, lemang and rendang, alongside popular offerings including fast food and assorted festive delicacies.
The event was graced by the presence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah, Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail and his consort Khaleeda Bustamam, along with other members of the royal family.
Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi and his wife were also in attendance.
Following the royal banquet, Raja Zarith Sofiah took time to greet visitors, joined by Tunku Mahkota Ismail and Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda, much to the delight of attendees.
Many visitors expressed joy at being able to meet members of the royal family in person, describing the occasion as a memorable highlight of the festive season.
One attendee, civil servant Zairi Karim, said he continues to attend the event annually despite long queues.
“I will still come because I want to meet our beloved royal family. I am from Johor, I love my Sultan. I started queuing as early as 8.30am, and only managed to enter an hour later,” he said.
An international student from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Adamu Chiroma from Nigeria, said he was pleased to take part in the celebration while embracing local culture.
“When we are in a foreign country, we need to adapt and try to become part of the community. That is why I wore traditional Malay attire, and I feel very happy. Today, the food provided is very delicious and Malaysians are very friendly,” he said.
The event reflected a spirit of unity and openness, with visitors from various backgrounds coming together to celebrate Aidilfitri in a uniquely Malaysian setting. - March 22, 2026
