THE government has maintained the price of subsidised diesel at RM2.15 per litre in Sabah and Sarawak, but has set a limit on diesel filling based on the type of vehicle used.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move was taken to ensure sufficient diesel supply, as well as to enable fairer distribution to all parties.
"Light public, goods and private land transport vehicles are set at a maximum of 50 litres per purchase. Public and goods land transport vehicles not exceeding three tonnes are set at a maximum of 100 litres per purchase.
"In addition, vehicles exceeding 3 tonnes are set at a maximum of 150 litres per purchase," he said in a special message today.
Anwar said that Sabah and Sarawak will continue to enjoy subsidised diesel at a rate of RM2.15 per litre, even though diesel prices have soared.
"This means that when this price difference swells, we must be vigilant and take more stringent control measures, and more effective enforcement.
"But considering the geographical and logistical conditions of Sabah and Sarawak, we have taken a decision that I think is reasonable at this stage. But leakage must be curbed and controlled," he said.
Therefore, he explained, the measure to limit filling was taken to guarantee and ensure that the supply can be distributed fairly and adequately to all.
Anwar informed that the government is concerned that there is a tendency to hoard and smuggle, as has been detected so far, without any adjustments involved.
"So I ask the people, friends, to understand that this measure is necessary to protect the interests of the people. It is not easy; it may be a little inconvenient for some.
"I ask for understanding and cooperation so that we can continue working to prevent this leakage," he said.
In the same development, he also advised all agencies and government machinery to be firmer and more vigilant.
"We cannot give subsidies and then see smuggling reaching hundreds of millions of ringgit every month," he stressed.
Anwar reminded that a stern warning must be given now and that every step taken by smuggling will be confronted with the full force of the government machinery. – March 26, 2026
