PARTI Amanah Nasional vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar today said the approach taken by the government to deal with the Middle East crisis was responsible, prudent and for the long – term.
"The government decided not to take a populist route, which may offer a respite temporarily, but it can invite more long-term implications."
Mahfuz, who is now assisting Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in leading the Pakatan Harapan (PH) charge in Kedah, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim adopted a balanced approach towards addressing the energy crisis.
The decision to maintain the subsidised RON95 at RM1.99 showcased the commitment to protect the working class from the rising living costs, which would worsen with a fuel hike, said Mahfuz.
The reduction of allowance to 200 litres a month is also rational since it is based on the actual use rate of the average consumer, he added.
He said the move protects about 90% of the population, who may otherwise be subjected to rapid price hikes.
“Allowing gig (informal) workers, such as food deliveries and ride sharing operators, to 800 litres a month, also showcased a commitment to protect those in the industry.
“The announcements yesterday demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensure the rakyat are shielded as far as possible from the ill-effects of the US-Iran conflict,” he added. – March 27, 2026
