DURING the 2026 Hari Raya Aidilfitri period, running red lights and using mobile phones while driving emerged as the most common traffic offences in Selangor, according to the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
The state-wide Hari Raya Special Operation ran from March 13 to March 29, targeting high-risk areas and monitoring compliance across major roads, highways, public transport terminals, bus depots, industrial zones, and other priority locations.
A total of 334 enforcement officers were deployed strategically throughout the operation.
State JPJ director Azrin Borhan said that while drivers cited being in a rush or failing to notice traffic lights as reasons for running red lights, mobile phone use remained a persistent problem.
“Some offenders cited being in a rush or failing to notice the traffic light had turned red before accelerating,” he said. “Using a mobile phone while driving distracts drivers and increases accident risk, and it continues to be a major challenge despite repeated warnings.”
During the two-week period, 45,140 vehicles were inspected and 1,789 vehicles faced enforcement action.
Overall, 6,688 offences were recorded under various provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987 and related regulations.
Beyond red light violations and mobile phone usage, common breaches included expired vehicle licences, driving without valid licences, lack of insurance coverage, technical offences, and overloading. Licence-related offences were the most frequent, followed by technical and other regulatory violations.
Azrin highlighted improved compliance among goods vehicles, with only nine breaches reported during the operation.
Most lorries were found transporting permitted items such as daily essentials, petroleum, and agricultural products, while empty vehicles were authorised to operate between 8am and 8pm.
The operation also employed undercover inspections on express buses to identify violations.
“Most express bus drivers complied with the rules and are increasingly aware of enforcement presence,” Malay Mail reported Azrin saying.
He added that JPJ Selangor remains committed to ongoing enforcement efforts to enhance road safety, reduce accidents, and raise compliance among drivers.
He reminded the public to drive responsibly, maintain vehicles in safe condition, and adhere strictly to traffic laws.
