Putrajaya dismisses claims of open requests to increase BUDI95 subsidy limit
Assertions as “entirely untrue and baseless” - April 8, 2026

THE Ministry of Finance (MOF) has firmly rejected claims that the public can freely apply to increase the subsidy limit under the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) scheme, describing such assertions as “entirely untrue and baseless”.

In a recent statement, the ministry explained that although a function for additional applications existed during the early phase of BUDI95 implementation, it was never intended for personal requests to raise eligibility limits.

“It was instead for specific cases with clear and verified operational needs such as e-hailing drivers and boat owners, subject to established criteria.

“The additional application function in the BUDI95 portal has been misinterpreted as a space to freely request an increase in eligibility limits. As a result, this application button has been deactivated,” the statement said.

Reframing the issue as one of public misunderstanding rather than policy change, the MOF stressed that the monthly eligibility cap of 200 litres remains in force, ensuring that subsidies are targeted at the majority while maintaining supply stability.

“Such a temporary measure is taken in light of continued global energy market pressures, which have increased subsidy costs and require more prudent management,” the ministry added.

According to MOF data, the 200-litre limit is sufficient for 90 per cent of BUDI95 users. At the subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre, recipients can purchase up to RM398 worth of RON95 monthly, while the government absorbs approximately RM500 in subsidy per recipient.

“The Government will continue to protect the people, strengthen enforcement to curb leakages, as well as closely monitor the global energy market and remain ready to make appropriate adjustments,” the statement said. - April 8, 2026
