A FATHER of two has been sentenced to six months in prison after admitting to possessing a video of child pornography, the Sessions Court here ruled today.
Idham Rhusla Mohamad Shahuri, 42, pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Jean Sharmila Jesudason.
The offence involved a single video stored on his Oppo A35 mobile phone at his home in Kampung Sadang, Belanja Kiri, Parit, in the Perak Tengah district, discovered around 12.51pm. last Monday.
He was charged under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Arfahanim Azureen Arfanuddin handled the prosecution, while Idham was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer M. Kathan.
Court facts revealed that officers from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Perak Tengah District Police Headquarters found the video in the accused’s phone gallery.
The material, downloaded from the Telegram application, was intended for his personal use. The court was told that only one video involved a minor wearing a secondary school uniform, alongside other non-child pornography content stored on the same device.
In mitigation, Kathan explained that the accused, a widower earning RM1,800 a month, supports two children who have recently completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Form Four examinations, as well as his 77-year-old father.
He requested a short custodial sentence, highlighting that this was Idham’s first offence and that his early guilty plea saved court time and resources.
Prosecution counsel Nor Arfahanim urged the court for a deterrent sentence to prevent recurrence and to address the increasing prevalence of child pornography in society.
Judge Jean Sharmila sentenced Idham to six months’ imprisonment, effective from the date of arrest, with three years of police supervision to follow. She also ordered rehabilitation counselling during incarceration.
Nor Arfahanim confirmed after the hearing that the accused will face additional charges at the Parit Magistrate Court related to the case. - April 8, 2026
