PN confirms vacancy of Opposition Leader post as letter sent to Dewan Rakyat Speaker
Perikatan Nasional says it has formally notified the Dewan Rakyat Speaker of a vacancy in the Opposition Leader position - April 17, 2026

A FORMAL letter notifying the vacancy of the Opposition Leader position in the Dewan Rakyat has been submitted to Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, following the resignation of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, according to Perikatan Nasional (PN).

PN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the letter had been sent and was expected to be received by the Speaker within a day or two.

“The letter has been sent and is expected to be received today or tomorrow,” he told reporters during the Terengganu PAS Hari Raya open house on Friday.

He said the coalition had also begun receiving applications from interested parties and was currently assessing them.

“We are evaluating them and have sought further details to better understand their structure and submissions before making the appropriate considerations at the top leadership meeting.

“We will consider their applications, and a decision will be made at the leadership meeting,” he said.

Ahmad Samsuri had previously confirmed that Hamzah was no longer serving as Opposition Leader, and said PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan had been instructed to formally inform the Dewan Rakyat Speaker of the vacancy.

The development comes as PN moves to reorganise its parliamentary leadership structure following Hamzah’s departure from the role, with a decision on his replacement expected to be made at the coalition’s top leadership level. - April 17, 2026
