Moderate earthquake strikes north Sumatra with no tsunami threat to Malaysia
The epicentre was located approximately 67 kilometres west of Nias - April 19, 2026

A MODERATE earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck North Sumatra in the early hours of the morning, with no tsunami threat posed to Malaysia.

Malaysia’s Malaysian Meteorological Department said the tremor occurred at 4.06am at a depth of 18 kilometres.

The epicentre was located approximately 67 kilometres west of Nias.

In a statement, the department confirmed that there was no risk of a tsunami affecting Malaysian shores following the quake.

No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been issued by authorities. - April 19, 2026
