KLUANG – A man is feared drowned after the car he was driving was swept away by floodwaters at Batu 18 of Jalan Batu Pahat-Mersing in Kahang, near here, yesterday.

Kluang district police chief Low Hang Seng, in a statement today, said the 5.30pm incident occurred when the Proton Waja driven by Md Rajihan Junaidi, 28, was making its way through a flooded stretch.

Rajihan’s wife, Khairunnisa Ibrahim, 25, was also in the vehicle.

“Based on the report lodged by Khairunnisa at the Kahang police station at 10.35pm yesterday, the car was swept away by strong currents to the right side of the road.”

He said Rajihan managed to break one of the car’s windows to let his wife out.

She was then rescued by the public.

A search was immediately launched for Rajihan, but the strong currents and dark conditions made it difficult, said Low.

The operation, involving police and fire personnel, resumed today. – Bernama, January 3, 2021
