Anwar defends Bumiputera agenda as ‘bolder’ under MADANI Govt, rejecting elitism claims

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defends his administration’s record on Bumiputera empowerment, saying the agenda has been pursued more strongly and decisively under the MADANI government,

The Prime Minister said today that the government’s approach reflects a balance between inclusivity and continued protection of Bumiputera participation in education and economic opportunities.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, he cautioned against selective readings of policy measures and urged a broader understanding of government initiatives.

Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said: “In the same time, 90 per cent of Bumiputera children are also given opportunities through the matriculation programme, which reflects the government’s inclusive approach.

“Therefore, in debates, do not only select one aspect without looking at the overall policy comprehensively. Do not create a perception of a zero-sum game competition,” he said.

Anwar highlighted the government’s decision to grant automatic entry into matriculation programmes for all students who achieve 10As, regardless of race, while maintaining existing Bumiputera quotas.

He said the policy demonstrates that the administration does not pursue elitist frameworks that marginalise Bumiputera communities, as alleged by critics.

At the same event, Anwar also directed MARA to accelerate work on proposed amendments to the Majlis Amanah Rakyat Act 1966, insisting that a draft be submitted within three months to strengthen governance and enhance the agency’s role in Bumiputera development.

“TPM (Deputy Prime Minister) has instructed that it be completed before the end of the year, but I do not want to wait too long.

“Submit the draft to me within three months,” he said.

The remarks came after Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported to have urged that the amendments be finalised by year-end.

Separately, MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the draft amendments to the MARA Act 1966 have already been completed and are currently undergoing stakeholder engagement.

He said the proposed changes are aimed at strengthening governance structures and ensuring MARA remains effective in advancing Bumiputera development in line with evolving economic needs. - May 3, 2026
