AN elderly man who was driving a van that struck and killed a Year Two pupil from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Maimon in Parit Sulong has been remanded for three days beginning today.

Batu Pahat District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the remand application was made to assist investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“The remand order against the suspect was issued by Magistrate Nurasidah A Rahman from 6 to 8 May after he was brought before the Batu Pahat Magistrates’ Court at 8am today,” he said when contacted.

The 60-year-old suspect had earlier been arrested following the fatal incident, which claimed the life of an eight-year-old girl in front of the main gate of SK Seri Maimon at around midday on Tuesday.

Police said the incident is believed to have occurred at approximately 12.30pm when the victim, a Year Two pupil at the school, was walking near the entrance and was struck by the van.

The child sustained severe head injuries and internal trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Parit Sulong Health Clinic. - May 6, 2026
