NRD: New MyKad will not disrupt government aid disbursement systems

THE National Registration Department (NRD) has given assurances that the upcoming transition to a restructured MyKad system, scheduled to be implemented next month, will not disrupt the process of claiming government aid or result in eligible recipients being removed from existing databases.

The clarification comes in response to claims circulating that the introduction of the new MyKad format could interfere with the disbursement of assistance programmes such as Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) and BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95), with concerns raised over potential technical disruptions or data loss during the migration process.

Addressing the matter, the department said it will work closely with relevant ministries and agencies responsible for distributing aid to ensure that all existing recipient records remain intact throughout the transition.

“The statement issued today is to address concerns raised by certain parties regarding possible technical disruptions or the omission of names from the list of aid recipients following the launch of the new MyKad structure in June,” it said in a statement.

It added that the migration of data would be carried out automatically within a centralised database system, ensuring that eligible recipients continue to receive their entitlements without interruption.

“The migration of information will take place automatically within the central database system, thereby ensuring that assistance will continue to be received by eligible recipients,” it said.

The department also explained that the enhanced security features in the new MyKad structure are intended to strengthen identity verification processes rather than complicate access to government support.

It said the upgraded system would remain fully compatible with existing subsidy and assistance distribution ecosystems currently in use nationwide.

“The focus of the National Registration Department is to enhance the security of citizens’ identity and not to make it difficult for people to receive government assistance,” it said.

Members of the public were also urged not to be misled by rumours suggesting that government aid would be halted for individuals who fail to immediately replace their existing identity cards.

It added that the replacement exercise would be implemented in phases, with detailed procedures for applications to be announced in due course. - May 14, 2026
