THE number of registered voters in Johor has climbed to 2,725,559 as of late last year, marking a 4.16 per cent increase compared with the 2,616,575 voters recorded during the 15th General Election.

Johor Election Commission director Nor Nekman Jaimon said the increase, equivalent to 108,984 additional voters, was primarily driven by the continued implementation of automatic voter registration for citizens aged 18 and above.

"This increase is based on the December 2025 electoral roll. The Kota Iskandar state seat has the highest number of registered voters at 129,344," he told Berita Harian.

He said the rapid expansion of the electoral register reflects the steady monthly influx of newly eligible voters, with between 30,000 and 40,000 citizens aged 18 and above automatically added to the roll in Johor each month.

These additions are incorporated into supplementary electoral rolls, which are then certified and gazetted before being opened for a 30-day public review period.

Nor Nekman said recent updates to the electoral roll also show substantial voter movement between constituencies, as well as changes in voter status and categorisation.

In March, the supplementary electoral roll recorded 40,958 automatic registrations, 11,134 constituency transfers and 965 updates in voter status or category.

The April supplementary roll, which remains open for public inspection until June 19, recorded 39,111 automatic registrations, 15,880 constituency changes and 1,369 status updates.

The Election Commission, he added, is fully prepared to conduct the upcoming state election, with 42,786 personnel placed on standby for deployment.

The dissolution of the Johor state assembly has triggered a constitutional requirement for elections to be held within 60 days, setting the stage for an imminent and closely watched political contest in the state.

In the 2022 Johor state election, Barisan Nasional formed the state government after winning 40 of the 56 seats. Pakatan Harapan secured 12 seats, with DAP taking 10, PKR one and Amanah one, while Perikatan Nasional won three seats and Muda secured one seat. - June 2, 2026
