THE Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) urges calm after tremors felt across Sabah and Sarawak following minor earthquakeshas moved to reassure the public following two minor earthquakes that occurred in Sabah and Sarawak on 2 June, stressing that both events were low in magnitude and posed no significant threat to public safety.
The twin seismic incidents, recorded roughly 12 hours apart, triggered light tremors in several communities across East Malaysia, prompting monitoring efforts by the national weather and geophysical agency.
METMalaysia Director-General Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the first earthquake occurred in Ranau, Sabah, at 10.36am.
The earthquake measured 2.9 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface.
According to Dr Mohd Hisham, the epicentre was located at latitude 6.07 degrees North and longitude 116.58 degrees East.
“Tremors were also felt in several areas around Kundasang, Ranau and Kota Belud, Sabah,” he said in a statement.
Later the same day, a second earthquake of identical magnitude was detected in Mambong, Sarawak, at 10.33pm.
The earthquake was also recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres and was centred at latitude 1.32 degrees North and longitude 110.39 degrees East.
“Tremors were also felt in several areas around Samarahan and Serian, Sarawak,” he said.
Although residents in both states reported feeling the ground shake, authorities emphasised that the earthquakes were classified as weak seismic events and did not indicate any heightened risk.
Dr Mohd Hisham urged the public not to be unduly concerned by the incidents, noting that both earthquakes were of low magnitude.
He said METMalaysia would continue to monitor developments closely and provide updated information whenever necessary.
The occurrence of two measurable earthquakes in Sabah and Sarawak on the same day highlights the natural seismic activity occasionally experienced in parts of East Malaysia, particularly in areas influenced by regional geological fault systems.
However, experts noted that earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor and are unlikely to cause structural damage.
Members of the public have been advised to rely on official channels for verified information, including METMalaysia’s website, the myCuaca mobile application and the department’s official social media platforms, where the latest weather and earthquake updates are regularly published.
As monitoring continues, authorities have reiterated that the situation remains stable and that no extraordinary measures are currently required following the two seismic events. - June 4, 2026
