CANDIDATES aged between 30 and 49 years old formed the largest group contesting in the 16th Johor State Election (PRN), reflecting the increasing participation of this generation in the state's political arena.
Election Commission (EC) Chairman, Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, out of the 172 candidates confirmed to be contesting, 88 were between the ages of 30 and 49.
He said today's nomination process featured 14 two-way clashes, 27 three-way contests, 12 four-way contests and three five-way fights, making it a tight campaign ahead of polling day on July 11.
“All nomination papers submitted at 56 nomination centres across the state were accepted, without any being rejected.
“They consist of 56 from Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH, 33 from Perikatan Nasional (PN), BERSAMA (15), MUDA (4), one each from Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (Asli) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), and six independent candidates,” he said.
Ramlan said male candidates continued to dominate the competition, with 138 men and 34 women contesting this election.
The youngest candidate is PH representative Danish Hossman Abd Rahman, 23, who contested in the Johor Lama state assembly, while the oldest candidate is Lim Chin Eng, 73, who contested in the Stulang state assembly under the PN ticket.
As for voters, he said the EC's registered voter statistics show that the 30 to 39-year-old group of voters is the largest segment in this Johor PRN, with 587,888 people.
This number is followed by voters aged 21 to 29 years old with 544,657 people, 40 to 49 years old (492,922), 50 to 59 years old (393,780) and 60 to 69 years old (308,313).
In addition, a total of 165,386 voters aged 18 to 20 years old will vote for the first time, while the smallest group of voters is recorded in the age range of 80 to 99 years old. – June 27, 2026
