TWO Malaysians were injured after a bomb exploded under a culvert on Highway 42, Kampung Phrai Wan, near Tak Bai sub-district, Narathiwat, today.

The victims were identified as Abdullah Syarapi Abd Rahman, 45, from Kelantan and Muhammad Yusri Udin, 38, from Sabah.

Narathiwat Provincial Police Chief, Major General Prayong Kotsakha, said Abdullah suffered shrapnel wounds to his forehead, serious injuries to his left leg and head injuries, while Muhammad only suffered minor injuries.

He said the incident occurred at about 11.41 am (Thailand time) in Kampung Phrai Wan, about 100 metres from the Sapom three-way junction on the Narathiwat-Tak Bai Highway.

He said the two victims, who were in a Malaysian-registered vehicle, were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) installed under the road culvert exploded.

"Both victims were conscious when rescued before being taken to Narathiwat Hospital for treatment.

"Abdullah suffered a two-centimetre wound to his forehead from bomb fragments, severe injuries to his left leg that caused significant deformity and head injuries believed to have been caused by glass fragments.

"Muhammad Yusri only suffered minor injuries without any obvious injuries," he said.

Following the incident, Prayong said security personnel from three agencies cordoned off the area and closed a one-kilometre stretch of road between the Sapom intersection and the U-turn area near a sand quarry.

"A Bomb Disposal Unit (EOD) team and forensic officers were also deployed to the location to conduct an inspection.

"The Malaysian-registered vehicle the victims were in was also damaged from the explosion," he said.

He said further investigations into the incident were still underway.

Meanwhile, Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said police received information that Malaysians were injured in the bomb blast.

"We are currently obtaining further information regarding the incident," he said. - June 29, 2026
