FORMER Finance Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, arrived at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to testify as a key prosecution witness in the Jana Wibawa corruption trial today.

He is the 11th prosecution witness in the Jana Wibawa case involving former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The case involves four charges of abuse of position for bribery, totalling RM225.3 million, and three charges of money laundering (AMLA), totalling RM200 million, faced by the Bersatu President.

Muhyiddin is accused of committing the act at the Prime Minister's Office, Perdana Putra Building in Putrajaya between March 1, 2020 and August 20, 2021, under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if convicted.

The Pagoh MP also faces three charges of receiving proceeds from illegal activities totalling RM200 million from a company that was deposited into Bersatu's Ambank and CIMB Bank accounts at the bank's branches in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur between February 2021 and July 2022.

The charges were brought under Section 4(1)(b) read with Section 87(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years' imprisonment and a fine of five times the value of the proceeds from illegal activities or RM5 million, whichever is higher.

Zafrul, who was the finance minister during Muhyidin's administration, is expected to testify on the implementation and approval process of the controversial Bumiputera contractor empowerment programme.

Tengku Zafrul, who was wearing a blue-striped coat and a white shirt, arrived at the court at 8:30 am for the proceedings, which will take place before Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, confirmed that the witness statement of the Senior Political Advisor to the Prime Minister was submitted to the defence on June 15.

The court had earlier set the next hearing for July 6 to 17 and July 27 to 29. Other dates were set for August 17 to 21 and August 26 and 27. - July 6, 2026
