IN a significant legal development at the Palace of Justice on Monday, a three-judge panel led by Court of Appeal President Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais rejected the prosecution's appeal against a prior appellate court decision.
The ruling, decided by a 2-1 majority with Justices Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah finding no error in the earlier acquittal, completely absolves the thirty-four-year-old politician of four severe charges.
The dismissed allegations encompassed abetment of criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property, and money laundering involving funds belonging to the Bersatu youth wing, Armada.
The apex court judgment effectively dismantles the original High Court conviction which had carried a sentence of seven years of imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and a ten million Ringgit fine.
Addressing the media following the verdict, the former Youth and Sports Minister expressed profound relief regarding the impact of the prolonged case on his personal life and political career, saying: “Man proposes, but Allah disposes.”
“I believe behind every trial, challenge, and obstacle, there is a reason why that test is given to us, the parliamentarian stated. When I look back at the past six years, right from the investigation stage, I did not bow down, I was not afraid, I did not use shortcuts, and I did not ask for special treatment because I knew I was on the side of the truth.
“I hold onto the principle of being brave because it is right, and because of that conviction, it has brought us all to this day,” Syed Saddiq said.
The Muar representative underscored the institutional weight of the decision, framing it as an endorsement of judicial independence rather than a mere personal victory.
“I did not commit any wrongdoing, and I stand by principle and courage because that is what is right, he remarked. I hope that following this decision, I can continue to defend the justice institutions of the nation, the independence of the judiciary, and the institutions that make Malaysia a great country.”
Syed Saddiq further stated his desire is that such legal tribulations would not be weaponised against others in the political arena.
“I hope no one else, including my own political adversaries, will ever have to go through what I went through. Ultimately, even if we hold differing political views, we are all Malaysians who wish to see this nation progress.”
When questioned on his immediate political future with MUDA, the lawmaker indicated that he would be pausing to gather his bearings and focus heavily on his family. “I have never left MUDA, but regarding the future and political plans, I think I will take a little time. Today, I wish to spend more time with my family.”
This newly acquired personal freedom marks the commencement of a fresh chapter for the politician, who confirmed he had received the formal approval of his parents, Sharifah Mahani Syed Abdul Aziz and Syed Abdul Rahman Al-Sagoff, to proceed with his wedding to his 32-year-old fiancée, Dayang Ara Nabellah Awang Astillah, widely known as Bella Astillah.
The endorsement was delivered immediately after he performed a prostration of gratitude in the courtroom.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my family, especially Mama and Buya. If you knew what they went through, particularly my mother, it was truly not easy. I also want to thank my fiancée who remained loyal throughout.
“It was not easy because before she was with me, I was an individual convicted of an offence. Yet she remained by my side, and praise be to God, today I can appreciate her spirit and her contributions,” he said.
While confirming the marital arrangements, he chose not to expand further on the domestic timelines whilst within the courthouse out of deference to the legal proceedings.
“Just now, father and Mama gave a positive signal so that I can take the next step after this. However, to comment further, perhaps you can ask outside the court because I respect the judicial institution of the country.
“I do not want this matter to focus heavily on my private life, but rather on something much bigger than that. Nevertheless, praise be to God, I have received the green light from Mama and Buya.” - July 13, 2026
