THE assault on football commentator and YouTuber Azizurrahman Zakaria, better known as Joe Zakaria, has raised questions over whether outspoken voices challenging the Malaysian football status quo are facing increasing pressure.
Azizurrahman, who runs the Joe Zakaria (YTSK) YouTube channel, was attacked by two unidentified men at a petrol station near Bandar Sri Damansara on Saturday, leaving him with a fractured eye socket and several other injuries.
The incident comes amid heightened debate surrounding Malaysian football, particularly over issues involving the national team, player eligibility and citizenship matters that have sparked intense discussion among supporters and football stakeholders.
Known for his outspoken commentary, Azizurrahman has frequently used his platform to discuss developments affecting Malaysian football, including controversies involving the administration, direction and governance of the sport.
His recent content included discussions on the highly debated eligibility and citizenship issue involving several national team players, a matter that has drawn widespread public attention and scrutiny.
While police have yet to determine the motive behind the attack, the incident has triggered speculation among football followers over whether it was connected to his public commentary and criticism of issues within the sport.
However, no evidence has emerged linking the assault to any individual, organisation or specific issue, with police continuing their investigation.
Azizurrahman previously said he had no personal disputes with anyone and denied having any conflicts that could have led to the attack.
“I have no enemies, I do not owe money to loan sharks, I have not disturbed anyone’s wife, and I have no issues involving road gangs,” he was quoted as saying.
He said the incident occurred while he was inflating his vehicle’s tyres when two men riding a Yamaha LC motorcycle approached him before assaulting him.
“I was filling air into my car tyres when suddenly two men came and kicked my head and hit me repeatedly,” he said.
Azizurrahman also claimed that one of the attackers recorded the incident while accusing him of stealing before both suspects fled the scene.
A video of the assault later circulated widely on social media, showing the attack before members of the public intervened.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat confirmed police received a report regarding the incident at 7.56pm on Saturday.
“Preliminary investigations found that the victim was approached by two men before being assaulted several times. The incident was also recorded,” he said.
Shamsudin said police were working to identify and locate the suspects, adding that the motive behind the attack was still under investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
