KUALA LUMPUR – Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is willing to step down from his ministerial position if his party’s Supreme Council withdraws from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration led by Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He told a press conference today that, as an Umno member, he is bound by the decisions of the party.

“If the decision has been made, as a member, I am bound by my party. If my party decides at the Supreme Council, which is the ultimate decision-making body, and instructs me to withdraw (from my office), I am bound to follow their decision,” said the Rembau MP.

Earlier today, Tan Sri Annuar Musa was removed from his position as secretary-general for Barisan Nasional (BN) and Muafakat Nasional (MN). He is being replaced by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

Ties between Bersatu and Umno have been strained recently, with both sides openly trading barbs at one another.

Annuar was seen defending Muhyiddin’s administration and the cooperation under PN over his own party.

On his personal stance about cooperating with other parties outside of PN, Khairy said he agreed with the Supreme Council’s decision of not cooperating with DAP and PKR.

On whether or not Umno can win big in a general election without Bersatu, Khairy said the matter still needs to be studied. – The Vibes, January 5, 2021
