A VIDEO call missed by a man the night before became the final attempt by his sister to reach him before she and her 11-year-old son were killed in a fatal road accident in Gua Musang.

Maria Yusoff, 42, her youngest son Muhammad Ziekyr Iman Abli, 11, and the Perodua Myvi driver Muhamad Syazwan Hakimi Ibrahim, 21, died at the scene after the vehicle collided head-on with a trailer lorry at Kilometre 25 of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai at about 7am.

The accident also left Maria’s eldest daughter, Nur Balqis Abli, 21, seriously injured. She remains warded at Gua Musang Hospital.

Maria’s younger brother, Mohamad Faizol Yusoff, 34, said he received a video call from his sister at around 9pm the previous night but failed to answer it as he was already asleep.

He said he was informed of the accident at about 10am before immediately travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Gua Musang Hospital.

“I regret that I was unable to answer the video call from my late sister because I was already asleep. We were very close and always kept in touch.

“My sister was a cheerful and friendly person. Usually, she would inform everyone whenever she planned to go somewhere. However, we were not told about her trip to Cameron Highlands this morning.”

Mohamad Faizol said his sister, who became a single mother after her husband died in July last year, had been raising four children on her own.

He said Maria’s three surviving children — two daughters and a son aged 21, 17 and 13 — would now be cared for by him and his siblings.

“Her second and third children already know about what happened to their mother. From now on, her children will be under the care of me and my siblings.

“My sister’s husband passed away in July last year, and now she has also passed away in the same month, exactly a year after her husband’s death.”

He added that Maria’s second and third children were not travelling with her during the day trip and remained at their village.

The bodies of Maria and her youngest son will be buried at the Kampung Kubang Tin Muslim cemetery in Melor, Kota Bharu.

The accident occurred when the Perodua Myvi, believed to have lost control before entering the opposite lane, collided with the trailer lorry, killing all three occupants of the car. - August 1, 2026
