INVESTIGATORS have obtained new leads on a suspected drug syndicate following the arrest of a Malaysian pilot in Jakarta, including how he allegedly managed to get through security checks at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said police were now working to identify individuals believed to be involved in the syndicate after questioning the suspect in Indonesia.
He said the information gathered during the sessions with the suspect had shed light on the network’s activities in Malaysia and abroad, including its possible financial links.
“The information was useful in several aspects, including efforts to trace syndicate members involved in Malaysia.
“We also found out how the suspect managed to pass KLIA checks, as well as the flow of funds involving the syndicate locally and internationally,” he said.
Hussein said the Malaysian investigation team received good cooperation from the Indonesian National Police (Polri) during the process.
The questioning, which began on Aug 12, was initially scheduled for two days but was extended until Aug 14 after Indonesian authorities allowed the Malaysian team additional time with the suspect.
“The suspect also cooperated well,” he said.
Previously, Bukit Aman confirmed that a team of officers from the NCID had been sent to Jakarta to assist in investigations into the alleged drug trafficking case involving the Malaysian pilot.
The 39-year-old man was arrested at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on July 28 after arriving on Malaysia Airlines flight MH727 from Kuala Lumpur.
Indonesian authorities alleged that he was attempting to smuggle about 25kg of drugs into the country. – August 14, 2026
