A 63-YEAR-OLD woman drowned after the boat she was travelling in overturned after hitting a tree stump near Gua Bewah at Tasik Kenyir, Hulu Terengganu, yesterday afternoon.

Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said the victim, Wan Esah Wan Daud, from Felda Chiku, Kelantan, was on a family holiday aboard a houseboat with 27 relatives.

"At 11am yesterday, the victim boarded a houseboat from Tasik Kenyir heading towards Taman Negara. When they reached the location at about 4pm, the victim and three family members got off the houseboat, which was moored at Gua Bewah, to go sightseeing by boat before it hit a tree stump.

"The collision caused the victim to fall into the water and become trapped beneath the boat. The victim was rescued by other family members and taken back to the houseboat," he said in a statement today.

Sharudin said the victim's son attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but she failed to respond.

She was subsequently transported by a Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) boat for about an hour before reaching the mainland at Tasik Kenyir.

"The victim, who had a history of lung disease, was pronounced dead from drowning and no criminal element was detected," he said.

Sharudin urged the public to prioritise safety when taking part in recreational activities, particularly around lakes and rivers. - August 30, 2026
