THE Election Commission (EC) will announce and display the proposed 17 new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats and their locations starting tomorrow, September 1, 2026.
The proposed addition of 17 state constituencies is expected to be a very significant development in the state's political landscape.
The addition will bring the total number of state assembly seats in Sarawak to 99 compared to the current 82.
Notices regarding the new seats will be published in Utusan Borneo and The Borneo Post tomorrow (September 1, 2026) for public review.
It will also be displayed at selected locations in each Parliamentary constituency throughout Sarawak for a month in accordance with Section 4(b), Part II, Thirteenth Schedule of the Federal Constitution.
The purpose of the display is to allow any party or representation to submit objections to the recommendations proposed by the EC for a period of one month in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
On 7 July 2025, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) approved the proposal to add 17 seats through the State Legislative Assembly (Membership) Bill 2025.
The Bill, among others, outlines that the last time a redelineation study was conducted in Sarawak was in 2015 and since then the number of voters in the state has increased significantly.
The reduction in the voting age implemented by the EC from 21 years to 18 years is also seen as a factor in the recommendation.
The 19th Sarawak DUN term will officially end on 14 February 2027, and according to the provisions of the Constitution, elections must be held within 60 days after the date of dissolution or expiration of the DUN term.
The 12th Sarawak State Election (PRN) was held on 18 December 2021. – August 31, 2026
