DAP’s Jelutong MP R.S.N. Rayer has urged the Government and national security agencies to investigate PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim of alleged US involvement in efforts to topple the Federal Government.

Rayer said the allegation could not be dismissed as a political anecdote if it involved a foreign government allegedly seeking to influence or facilitate the removal of a duly elected government.

“If the allegation is accurate, this is not merely a matter of partisan politics. It is a matter of national security and national sovereignty,” he said in a statement.

He urged PAS to disclose who attended the alleged meeting, when and where it took place, who authorised it and what was discussed.

“Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy. We are a democratic sovereign state. Governments are changed through the ballot box and constitutional processes, not through secret meetings with foreign powers,” he said.

Rayer also questioned why the alleged meeting had not been reported to the Malaysian authorities.

“Hadi Awang must explain why was this not immediately reported to the Prime Minister then, the Home Ministry, the Foreign Ministry, the police or the relevant national security agencies? The US officials involved could have been immediately arrested. Why did PAS stay silent all this while.”

Rayer described the alleged conduct as “treachery” and “treason” if a foreign power had indeed sought to interfere in Malaysia’s political affairs.

“This is treachery. This is treason,” he said.

He called on the Government, particularly Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and relevant national security agencies, to investigate Abdul Hadi’s claim.

“The sovereignty of Malaysia is bigger than any political party,” he said.

Hadi made the allegation when opening the 72nd PAS Muktamar, claiming PAS officials had ignored alleged overtures from US officials to overthrow the Barisan Nasional-led government at the time.

The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has since denied ever seeking to determine Malaysia’s political leadership, saying any reports alleging otherwise were false.

“The United States has never sought to determine Malaysia’s political leadership and any reports alleging otherwise are false,” Chargé d’Affaires ad interim David H Gamble Jr said in a statement.

The claims surrounding the alleged meeting have not been independently substantiated. - September 6, 2026
