MAJOR carriers, including Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, have cancelled or rescheduled numerous flights between Malaysia and Jakarta following the continuous eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia's Sunda Strait.

The eruption has produced massive volcanic ash clouds that severely disrupted operations and forced temporary closures at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) announced the cancellation of 12 flights operating in both directions between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.

The affected services comprise flights MH710, MH711, MH712, MH713, MH716, MH717, MH720, MH721, MH722, MH723, MH724, and MH725.

MAS stressed that the sweeping cancellations were implemented strictly with passenger and crew safety in mind as thick ash clouds continue to present severe operational hazards.

Simultaneously, AirAsia confirmed that a number of its flights to and from Jakarta have been cancelled or rescheduled.

Emphasising that volcanic ash poses a significant threat to aircraft safety, AirAsia executed immediate operational adjustments for selected routes with affected flight paths.

The low-cost carrier stated that it has directly notified all impacted guests regarding their flight statuses and recovery options, working closely to ensure travellers can safely resume their journeys on the next available flights.

With the volcanic situation remaining highly fluid and subject to sudden changes, both airlines are keeping a close watch on Mount Anak Krakatau's activity.

Travellers with upcoming itineraries involving Jakarta are strongly advised to check their latest flight status online via the respective airline websites before heading to the airport.

Passengers are also urged to ensure their contact details are up to date to receive real-time notifications.

For further assistance and recovery options, Malaysia Airlines customers can reach out through the MAS Live Chat service or Global Contact Centre, while AirAsia passengers can connect with customer support teams through official digital channels.

Normal flight operations are expected to resume as soon as safety conditions are officially verified. – September 6, 2026
