Unhealthy air spreads to 37 areas as Malaysia’s haze intensifies

Serian in Sarawak remains the worst-hit at an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 188, while several areas in Selangor, Johor and Negri Sembilan also recorded elevated levels.

Unhealthy air quality was recorded in 37 areas across Malaysia as of 7am on Tuesday - September 14, 2026

UNHEALTHY air quality has spread to 37 areas nationwide, with Serian in Sarawak recording the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading at 188 as haze conditions deteriorated in several parts of the country.

According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Johan Setia recorded the second-highest reading at 183, followed by Pasir Gudang at 174 and Larkin at 169.

Cheras recorded 167, while Shah Alam and Nilai each recorded 166. Putrajaya, Kota Tinggi and Tangkak recorded 165 each.

Seremban recorded 164, followed by Pengerang and Samarahan at 163 each, Balok Baru in Kuantan at 161, and Batu Muda and Klang at 160 each.

Petaling Jaya, Batu Pahat and Indera Mahkota in Kuantan each recorded 159.

Other areas in the unhealthy category were Tanjung Malim, Banting and Alor Gajah (157 each); Kemaman (156); Bukit Rambai and Paka (155 each); Seri Manjung, Kuala Selangor, Temerloh, Jerantut and Kuching (154 each); Kuala Terengganu (153); Rompin and Kluang (151 each); Port Dickson (131); Tasek Ipoh (129); Balik Pulau (124); and Minden in Penang (103).

A further 31 areas recorded moderate air quality as of 7am.

Under the API classification, readings of 0 to 50 indicate good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and 301 and above hazardous. - September 14, 2026
