MALAYSIA has been elected to the 35-member Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for a new two-year term, marking its 11th stint on the body since joining the agency in 1969.
The election took place during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, held from Sept 14 to 18.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday the Board of Governors is one of the IAEA’s principal policy-making bodies, overseeing the agency’s operations, approving safeguards agreements and shaping key policy decisions on atomic science and technology.
Malaysia last served on the Board from 2020 to 2022.
The latest election reflects Malaysia’s commitment to contributing its experience and expertise to the Board’s mandate, particularly in advancing nuclear non-proliferation objectives and promoting the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Malaysia said it looked forward to collaborating with fellow IAEA member states and the agency to advance these objectives and strengthen international cooperation in atomic science and technology. - September 18 2026
