TUN Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he did not expect his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, to die so suddenly, saying she had appeared to be well the night before.
In a video shared on Mahathir’s social media, he was seen speaking to Sultan Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who visited the family yesterday to pay his last respects to Hasmah.
“I did not expect her to die today(yesterday),” Mahathir told Al-Sultan Abdullah.
“She was quite the night before.”
The Pahang ruler was accompanied by Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.
Mahathir thanked the royal family for travelling from Pahang to offer their condolences and pay their last respects to Siti Hasmah.
Siti Hasmah died at about 9.25 am yesterday at the National Heart Institute (IJN), aged 100.
Her son, Datuk Seri Mokhzani Mahathir, said she was in good spirits the night before, but her condition deteriorated suddenly the following morning.
Another son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, said Mahathir remained by his wife’s side until she breathed her last.
Siti Hasmah was later laid to rest at the Heroes’ Mausoleum in Putrajaya and accorded a state funeral.
Mahathir and Siti Hasmah had been married for 70 years. – September 29, 2026
