PARENTS should check for the Malaysian Conformity (MC) safety mark before buying squishy toys for children, Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said.

She urged consumers to make checking the mark on toys or their packaging a routine, stressing that attractive designs and prices should not take precedence over compliance with Malaysia’s safety standards.

“When children show us a toy they like, naturally we want to buy it for them. This is especially true of squishy toys, which come in various shapes and colours and can appeal even to adults.

“But when making that choice, I want to offer one simple reminder. Look for the MC mark on the toy or its packaging first. Make this a habit every time you buy toys for your children,” she said.

Fuziah said toy safety was regulated under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599) and related regulations, which require manufacturers, importers and sellers to ensure products meet the applicable safety requirements.

She also advised parents to check age recommendations, instructions and safety warnings. For online purchases, consumers could ask sellers for photographs of labels or packaging if the relevant information was unclear.

“Children may choose toys because they look cute, but we can help them choose more carefully. Let’s look for the MC mark and check the labels before buying, so that their enjoyment of play is always accompanied by our attention to safety,” she said. - October 15, 2026
