THE family of the 16-year-old student charged with murdering Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal will take legal action against individuals allegedly impersonating them through social media posts and videos about the case.

Defence lawyer Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias said the accused’s family had not issued any statements or uploaded posts about the case on social media or other platforms.

“As I have explained, any such false posts did not come from the family. They have not made any statements on social media or any other platform.

“We will take action and lodge a police report to enable the authorities to investigate in the near future.

“We have also taken note of the matter and will advise the family to take appropriate action,” he told reporters after the charge proceedings at the Magistrate’s Court in Batu Pahat today.

Mohd Azlan Shah also conveyed the family’s appeal for the public to refrain from making comments or circulating inappropriate information about the case on social media.

“Malaysia has laws, and a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The proceedings have only just begun, and all judgments and decisions fall within the court’s jurisdiction.

“I hope there will be no more baseless stories, as we have also identified several social media accounts linking this case to various claims.

“As lawyers, we are advising the family and will take legal action,” he said.

Earlier, his 16-year-old client was charged with murdering Irene Sofiya earlier this month.

The accused, who was the victim’s classmate, nodded to indicate that he understood the charge when it was read before Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno.

No plea was recorded because murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The proceedings were held in camera. - October 15, 2026
