TRUCK drivers make up the largest group of motorists caught driving under the influence of drugs in Penang this year, with the state Road Transport Department (JPJ) recording 38 cases involving various road users.
Penang JPJ director Zulkifly Ismail said the cases also involved private vehicle drivers and bus drivers.
Three more cases were detected during a joint operation with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) at the JPJ Valdor enforcement station last night.
Those who tested positive were a 45-year-old factory bus driver, a 34-year-old lorry driver and a 38-year-old motorcyclist.
Urine screening found the bus driver positive for methamphetamine and morphine, the lorry driver for morphine, and the motorcyclist for cannabis, Zulkifly said.
“Almost all those detained for driving under the influence of drugs gave the same reason, saying they did it for fun or were influenced by friends,” he said when met during the operation.
Zulkifly said methamphetamine, also known as syabu, was among the substances most frequently detected in operations this year, alongside cannabis, kratom and morphine. - October 22, 2026
