PERLIS Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has insisted that his suspension from Bersatu will not affect his position as head of the state government, maintaining that he will continue discharging his duties under the Perlis Constitution.

He said the disciplinary action was an internal party matter and would not disrupt the administration of the state.

“There is no impact from the party suspension decision on state administration, and certain parties should not confuse the two issues,” he told Berita Harian last night.

“As a leader or member of Bersatu, the suspension is a party matter. As Menteri Besar, I will continue administering the state in accordance with the Perlis Constitution.”

Abu Bakar said he accepted the decision by Bersatu’s Disciplinary Board but would submit a formal appeal through the party’s established procedures.

His membership rights were suspended with effect from Oct 13 over alleged breaches of Clause 9.1.4 of the party constitution and its Code of Ethics and Conduct.

Bersatu Perlis chairman Izizam Ibrahim confirmed the suspension after receiving a letter dated Oct 14, signed by the party’s Disciplinary Board chairman, Datuk Mohd Radzi Manan.

Abu Bakar was also removed from all positions he held in the party but given 14 days to appeal to Bersatu’s Appeals Board.

Perlis State Legislative Assembly Speaker Rus’sele Eizan said state administration was continuing as usual, adding that the state leadership’s position also depended on the stance of the six PAS assemblymen in Perlis. - October 22, 2026
