THE Malaysian Government is working with Myanmar to facilitate the repatriation of 5,000 of its nationals this year, following the return of 1,476 detainees in the first phase of the operation on Sept 29.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the first group had completed the necessary identification, verification and documentation procedures before being sent home.
He said the Foreign Ministry, in collaboration with the Home Ministry and relevant agencies, would continue direct diplomatic negotiations with Myanmar to coordinate the remaining repatriations.
"These negotiations are aimed at coordinating the verification, documentation and acceptance of individuals to be repatriated, as well as determining the implementation of subsequent phases based on the readiness of both countries," he said.
Saifuddin was responding to a written parliamentary question from Jamaludin Yahya (PN-Pasir Salak) on the targets for the phased repatriation of Myanmar refugees in 2026 and 2027.
He said confirmation of nationality and acceptance by the country of origin were essential requirements for ensuring the repatriation process could proceed in an orderly and continuous manner.
The Home Ministry would also continue enforcement measures and the orderly repatriation of foreign nationals who failed to meet Malaysia's immigration requirements.
"The government will ensure that every repatriation process is carried out safely, orderly and responsibly, taking into account the welfare and rights of the individuals concerned, in accordance with the law and the country's sovereignty," he said. - November 6, 2026
