KUALA LUMPUR – No elections will be held during the emergency period, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in a special address to the nation today.

He said this includes the general election, state elections and by-elections, which must be held within 60 days following the dissolution of the Parliament or state assemblies, or if any of the seats become vacant.

Acknowledging calls by certain quarters for a snap election, Muhyiddin said he has no such intention, and that his decision is out of concern for public lives.

“The main reason that is stopping me from advising the Agong to dissolve Parliament and allow an election is the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I know the rakyat do not want an election to be held anytime soon to avoid the spread of Covid-19, similar to what happened after the Sabah election. However, lately, there are parties urging for an election to be held.

“It is my obligation as the head of the government to ensure the lives and safety of the rakyat. And, this is one of the main thrusts demanded by Islam.”

Earlier today, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had in a statement through the Istana Negara consented to a nationwide emergency following the increasing number of Covid-19 cases of late.

It takes effect until August 1, or earlier, if the pandemic situation improves significantly.

Muhyiddin gave his assurance that a general election will be held once the special independent committee – to be formed by the government with opposition MPs and health experts – deemed the pandemic situation to be under control.

“At that time, it is up to the rakyat to decide which government they would like to lead the country. This is my commitment and I will hold true to it.”

His statement comes as Umno pushes its bid to topple the prime minister, with several MPs expected to withdraw their support, and force a general election.

Muhyiddin said during the emergency period, Parliament and all state assemblies will not convene, unless otherwise assented to by the Agong.

The prime minister also urged all politicians to set aside their differences and stand in solidarity with the people in addressing the pandemic.

He warned that stern action will be taken against any quarters attempting to disrupt the government’s effort in battling Covid-19 and aiding economic recovery.

“For me, in this trying time, it is important that politicians set aside their differences. When the time comes to play politics, then do it with full responsibility.” – The Vibes, January 12, 2021
