KUALA LUMPUR – The Umno political bureau has convened for a special meeting, just hours after Istana Negara announced a nationwide emergency.

It is understood that the meet started at 3pm, and is chaired by party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Among those said to be in attendance are deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and state liaison chiefs.

It is unclear if a press conference will be held after the meeting.

The Vibes understands that among the main agendas today is to discuss Umno and Muafakat Nasional’s stand and direction following the emergency declaration this morning.

It is understood that Umno wants to ensure BN’s cooperation with PAS under the MN banner is maintained heading into the 15th general election.

Its leaders have, on several occasions, said the BN lynchpin will work with the Islamist party in the coming polls, and cut ties with the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led Bersatu.

In a statement earlier, the palace announced that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to a proclamation of emergency following the surge in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks.

The order is in effect till August 1, or earlier if the government is able to get the pandemic under control. – The Vibes, January 12, 2021
