MIRI – Police say roadside fishing in Sibu is not allowed throughout the movement control order (MCO), after a man in the Sarawak district was caught fishing at a roadside drain and was fined RM1,000.

The man, in his 30s, was detained by police and slapped with the compound late yesterday afternoon.

Sibu police chief Stanley Jonathan told reporters today that even fishing on the roadside is prohibited during the MCO.

“The man was found fishing by the roadside in Kemuyang (a commercial-cum-residential estate).

“A police team in a patrol car was passing the area and saw him fishing near a drain and they detained him immediately.

“He was issued a compound which carries a RM1,000 fine for violating the MCO,” he said.

While Sibu is under the MCO, the rest of Sarawak is under the conditional MCO following a surge of Covid-19 infections since January 10.
