MIRI – Sarawak today announced a RM405 million relief package to help residents affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and floods.

Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg said the sum will go towards subsiding certain expenditures by households and businesses.

In a press briefing at his Kuching office, he said the state government is aware that many Sarawakians have been adversely impacted.

“The RM405 million will be used from now until June to subsidise the expenses of households, and those in businesses and industries.”

Among the package’s main elements are discounts on electricity and water bills for some 650,000 premises, trading licence fees, assessment rates, low-cost housing rental and land tax.

These discounts range from 5% to 30%, depending on category.

Johari said hotels and lodging houses are exempt from paying their licence fees until June.

He expressed hope that with the availability of a Covid-19 vaccine soon, Sarawak will be able to contain the virus crisis by June. – The Vibes, January 21, 2021
