KOTA KINABALU – A strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale hit the Talaud Islands, Indonesia at 8.23pm tonight.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department however said the quake posed no tsunami threat to Sabah.

The quake occurred at a depth of 98.5km, according to the United States Geological Survey, who pegged it at 143km southeast of the Talaud Islands in Indonesia, near the Philippines.

On January 15, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck West Sulawesi, northeast of the city of Majene, killing at least 84 people, while thousands were displaced as of January 18.

In 2015, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit near Ranau in Sabah which left 84 people dead mostly near the Kinabalu National Park in Kundasang. – The Vibes, January 21, 2020
