KOTA KINABALU – A damaged section of the Luyang flyover will be closed until a road concessionaire repairs the “engineering defect”, said Sabah Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

He said the repair work will not be done by the company that built the structure, but by the concessionaire maintaining the road.

“The concessionaire will immediately repair the engineering defect, not the company that built the road as they already handed over the road to the government upon completion and it was already opened to road users.

He said that the remainder of the road outside the section remains usable. He said this in a statement after conducting a site inspection yesterday.

Bung Moktar, who is Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I, was accompanied by Public Works Ministry permanent secretary Mohd Jasmin Julpin, Public Works Department director Ali Ahmad Hamid, and members of opposition parties.

Bung Moktar said heavy rainfall, structural inconsistency and a drainage structure underneath the flyover probably caused the engineering defect.

“Repair works will be done immediately to allay public concerns and for the safety of the drivers,” he said.

On another note, Bung said 10 roads have been damaged by landslides in Sabah.

He said the damages were the results of bad weather conditions over the last week. He predicted more landslides could happen if weather conditions do not improve.

Some RM250 million was spent to build the flyover and part of the road around it. – The Vibes, January 22, 2021
