SUBANG JAYA – A “barrier-free city” where the elderly and disabled can move about safely and with ease – this is what the local council here envisions for the municipality ahead of its status upgrade next month.
Walkways, non-slippery tiles and ramps have been constructed in the business centres of USJ 10 Taipan, SS15, SS16 and Puchong Prima, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) president Noraini Ruslan told a press conference recently.
“It is our duty to take care of the disabled and senior citizens, those who are unable to fend for themselves.
“We need to make the city easier (for them) to access.”
MPSJ councillor Lee Jen Uyin told The Vibes that Subang Jaya was initially developed as a “car city”, but the increase in its population size and number of senior citizens led to calls for the area to be more pedestrian-friendly and have more public transport terminals.
“Previously, people in wheelchairs were unable to safely cross the road, with cars going at 80kph to 100kph.
“Can you imagine how dangerous that is?”
Subang Jaya will officially be declared a city on October 20. – The Vibes, September 29, 2020
