PASIR MAS – Fifteen families have been ordered to evacuate after the Sg Kelantan riverbank near Dataran Air Muleh in Kg Jalan Pohon Celagi here collapsed this morning.
Pasir Mas district police chief Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said police were alerted to a crack in a road near the area about 10.30pm yesterday.
“A landslide occurred between 2.30am and 6.30am today,” he told reporters at the scene.
“This caused the riverbank to ‘break’, leading to a house destroyed and eight others on the verge of collapse.
“No casualties were reported.”
He said 50 people from 15 families were told to immediately evacuate.
“We have also closed all of the village’s exit and entry roads, as the unstable soil movements still pose a danger.
“Residents first noticed a small crevice in the road two days ago, and it got bigger early today.”
State Industrial, Trade, Investment and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanifa Ahmad, who is also Pengkalan Pasir assemblyman, said: “According to the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID), the landslide involved a 100m stretch, and that soil movements are still happening.
“I’ve urged DID to lodge a report to enable repair works to be conducted, and the residents’ representative has been told to gather information on the families affected, so that aid can be rendered immediately.”
He added that he has contacted the menteri besar and local council about setting up a shelter for the families at the Pasir Mas district hall. – Bernama, February 17, 2021
