KOTA KINABALU – 56 opposition MPs and three senators have come out in full force to call on Asean to suspend Myanmar’s membership in the economic union.

This is due to the worsening crisis in the country following the February 1 military coup which has seen dozens killed and hundreds reportedly arrested in the military’s crackdown.

“The killing of at least 38 protesters on March 3 shows that the global sanction on the Myanmar junta including Asean’s non-recognition of the junta is ineffective and inadequate.

“We call upon on the Malaysian government and those in Asean governments to commence the process to suspend Myanmar’s membership in Asean until the military junta sits down with Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) and protestors to derive at a peaceful solution to the crisis,” the group said in a joint statement issued from Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau’s office today.

The group said Asean has a moral responsibility to stop the political massacre, adding that the economic union should not condone the killing of innocent people in Malaysia.
