GEORGE TOWN – It is all systems go for Gurney Wharf, with the open tender for the project’s first component to be called in June.

The necessary applications and approvals are under way.

Penang Housing, Local Government, and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo visited the reclamation site today to highlight the completion of the promenade, located on the site’s outermost periphery.

“It is set to be completed in the first half of next year. The entire project will cost RM176 million, but it might be lower when it is completed.

“The estimated cost for Phase 1 will depend on the contractors, and physical work is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year.”

The first component is divided into two phases. The first includes a skatepark, playground and 800-vehicle car park, set for completion in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Phase 2 involves the beach, a boardwalk, two piers and a water garden, slated for completion at end-2023.

“All this is inclusive of the landscaping of the public park, kiosks for retail and F&B operators, and facilities catering to handicapped people,” said Jagdeep.

“I am also going to push for more bus bays, as we will be expecting tourists here as well.

“I want the people of Penang to stand here in one year’s time and enjoy the facilities set up for them. This reclamation project is being done with them in mind.” – The Vibes, March 19, 2021
