KUALA LUMPUR – Three people died and another three were injured when part of a tower crane collapsed at a highway construction site near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai in Cheras this morning.
Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi said three of the victims are construction workers.
The department’s operations room, in a statement, said it received a distress call on the incident at the Sg Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) at 8.45am.
“The team deployed to the scene found that the crane fell on a Perodua Bezza. The driver, a local man, was seriously hurt.
“Of the three construction site workers, it is believed that two of them died after falling from a height of almost 37m.”
Nordin told the press: “One of the deceased is still crushed at the site. The rescue is ongoing.
“The fire department and the contractor are working on lifting the load crushing the victim.”
It is the second tragedy involving SUKE in less than a month.
On March 3, two women died and three individuals sustained serious injuries when the van they were in was crushed by a fallen overhead bridge structure in Desa Tun Razak.
The five, aged between 30 and 45, were all Malaysians.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has ordered an immediate stop to construction and maintenance works at the site near Puncak Banyan, to allow investigations to be conducted.
“I understand that the incident occurred while maintenance was being carried out. The area will be sealed off until the probe is completed.
“I have also ordered construction work to be halted.
“The rescue effort is expected to be completed by midnight.”
He said the project developer has been instructed to find an alternative route for residents of a nearby apartment who have had their access road closed due to the incident. – Bernama, March 22, 2021
