MIRI – Eight men have been arrested in Kapit district for staging cockfights in the Covid-19 red zone.

The eight locals aged between 45 and 54 were nabbed in a vacant plot of land near Kapit town yesterday afternoon, said Kapit police chief Deputy Supt Freddy Bian.

He told local reporters today that police carried out a raid yesterday afternoon after a public tip-off at 2.45pm.

“The eight arrested have been issued RM10,000 compound each for violating the conditional movement control order staging the cock-fight.

“The RM10,000 fine is under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulation 2020.

“The eight arrested will also be charged under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1963.”

He said the authorities seized sharp spurs being used in the cockfight as well as live and dead cockerels.

The eight men have been remanded pending their appearance in court. – The Vibes, March 23, 2021
