MIRI – Three more districts in Sarawak have cancelled their Ramadan bazaars due to fears over the escalating number of Covid-19 infections.

The Samarahan District Council, Sibu Rural District Council and Padawan Municipal Council all issued separate statements announcing they were aborting plans for bazaars scheduled for between April 12 and May 12.

“Plans for the Ramadan bazaars will be cancelled in the interest of public safety due to the daily surge in Covid-19 cases,” they said.

The three districts join the Bintulu Development Authority, Sarikei District Council, Miri City Council, Kuching City South Hall and Kuching City North Hall, which had earlier cancelled plans to hold Ramadan bazaars, also between April 12 and May 12.

Kuching City North was the first council to cancel  the Ramadan bazaars under its jurisdiction.

Sarawak has 40 local district councils. Kuching is divided into city north and city south, each with its own council chairman.

Bintulu, Miri, Samarahan, Sibu, Kuching and Sarikei are classified as Covid-19 high-risk red zones, along with seven other districts. – The Vibes, April 9, 2021
